Summary

Friar Laurence, tending his garden, muses on the similarities between the plant kingdom and human nature. Romeo appears and tells him about his new love, Juliet. Romeo asks him to marry the two of them right away. The friar is astonished, because Romeo had so recently loved Rosaline. He agrees to marry them, but urges caution.
